I absolutely loved this moment. Early Penny character growth! By using their “language” to explain how fragile her boys can be, she totally surprises herself. The pre-Leonard Penny wouldn’t have cared enough to try. Not that Penny was evil, she was indifferent.
At this point of the episode she stopped attempting to outshine the new neighbor and accepted losing her status as “queen bee”. So this moment comes out of selfless concern, not jealousy or envy. And I love that she even recognizes how that doesn’t sound her.
And now in season 7 Penny wears her affection for the guys as a badge of honor. She defends them, comforts them, has introduced Howard to the love of his life, has discovered true love and metaphorically kicks their asses when they need it.
My point being that this show isn’t just about four “nerds” and the “normal” girl who disrupts their lives. It’s about the way we all evolve and how we have to potential to grow into better versions of ourselves—that is when you act in kindness, like Penny did in this scene.
